About the Site

This Web site features a virtual tour of a private gallery of Japanese masks. Ryoji Otsuka, a mask maker and graduate of the Department of Carving at Tama Art University, sponsors the site. Most of the text is currently offered only in Japanese, but you can read the English titles of the masks to children.

What to Do

  1. Explain to children that masks are worn instead of makeup in certain types of Japanese theater.

  2. Tell them that these masks are hand-carved from wood and used in Japanese plays to show different characters.

  3. At the Web site, ask children to tell which masks have happy, sad, angry, or surprised faces.
